Waddle White Goes to Hell

Overview

Waddle White Goes to Hell is a 2D platformer created for the UNC Charlotte 49 hour Fall Game Jam. The theme for the game jam was “only once” and our take on this theme was to have a character that has movement abilities and powerups, but they could only be used once during each level. The movement abilities included dashing in each direction (up, down, left, right), and the powerups were a ice ball, grappling hook, and a rocket jump.

Project Goals

  • Create a game within 49 hours
  • Create a platformer with custom abilities
  • Implement easy to understand movement abilities
  • Design unique levels to go along with restraints

Level Design

My team and I tried to design each level to require a combination of the movement abilities and powerups to be completed. We came up with some level designs that were able to trick the player to use the wrong abilities first and unable to complete the level. This added a sort of puzzle feeling to the game. As the player advances through the levels they are required to use more and more of the movement abilities and powerups to be able to go to the next level.

My Contribution

I was in charge of doing most of the environmental art for this project as well as part of the programming. I made the background art, wall textures, lava animation, and a few other smaller objects. I also assisted with the programming of the character, the movement abilities, and the power ups. I helped design and improve all the levels and gathered feedback from others through playtesting
